He leaned back in his worn armchair, the familiar weight of the cushions a comfort. The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls. Liam had a book in his lap, the pages marked by a well-loved bookmark. He sighed contentedly, the scent of old paper and leather filling the room.

"Absolutely not," Maya declared, arms crossed, her voice tight. "We can barely keep this place clean as it is, let alone deal with a shedding dog." She gestured emphatically.

Liam slowly closed his book, the warmth receding slightly. "But think of the companionship," he said softly, wanting her to understand the simple pleasure a furry friend would bring. "Someone to greet us at the door…" Maya just shook her head, her face set in a stubborn expression.
